The shelf series, which references traditional Korean chaekgeori screens — translated as books and things, is a still-life genre that was popular in the 18th and 19th century which depicted books and objects in everyday life — is an exploration of the symbolism in the objects we put on display and the way they reflect the aesthetics of our politics, as the engagement in consumerism is reflects one’s policial values in the current discourse, regardless of intensionality. The series is an ongoing project consisting of multiple pieces that can weave a larger narrative and can also stand on its own, functions as a framework to take snapshots of the artist’s continued exploration of the concept, and provides a glimpse into the mechanisms of the creative process.
